3/11/2011 – How do you calibrate the thermometer? I have the Big Red heavy duty probe thermometer
Thank you
Response From Southern Indiana Butcher Supply: To calibrate the thermometer using the ICE POINT METHOD:
Fill an insulated container, such as a wide mouth “thermos” bottle with a mixture of potable crushed ice and
water.
The container must have crushed ice throughout to
provide an environment of 32°F, so you may have to pack
more ice into the container during the process.
When the mixture of the water has stabilized after four or
five minutes, insert the thermometer to be calibrated to the
appropriate immersion depth.
Be sure to hold the stem of the instrument away from the
bottom and sides of the container (preferably one inch) to
avoid error. Wait until the thermometer stabilizes before
adjusting the thermometer.
To adjust the thermometer disassemble the case. Look for the potentiometer located near the PCB sensor wire connection. Using a small screwdriver, adjust the potentiometer to the desired reading. Reassemble.
12/27/2010 – How often does the manufacturer recommend that the big red digital thermometer be re-calibrated?
Thank you, KaS
Response From Southern Indiana Butcher Supply: There is no manufacturer specified recommendation as to time between re-calibrations. However, most food service authorities insist that a calibration be performed every day and when the thermometer has been bumped or dropped.
11/27/2010 – what is the battery that powers the thermometer?
Response From Southern Indiana Butcher Supply: This Big Red thermometer uses one 1.5 volt type LR44 or equivalent battery
